Matt. 4:18 And while He was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
Matt. 4:19 And He said to them, Come after Me, and I will make you fishers of men.

I encountered Matthew 4:19 last week in our morning revival, and I can’t seem to move forward without writing something about it. Last week’s morning revival mainly talked about working for the Lord, at least in the latter part of the week. If we focus on verse 19, we can see a pattern of a man’s service for God:

First, there is a word: “And He said to them.” Second, there is a calling: “Come after Me.” Lastly, there is a plan: “I will make you fishers of men.” To put it simply, it is God’s initiation, God’s command, and God’s plan.

And through Peter’s cooperation and obedience, the Lord was able to fulfill His purpose and indeed made Peter a fisher of men, from the approximately 3,000 people saved on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41) to the many lives still touched today through his writings, namely, 1st Peter and 2nd Peter. But the point here is not how to make a name for yourself; it is about what God can do for man even in his service for Him. All those who desire to serve the Lord and be fruitful in their service must learn to wait on the Lord. It is His initiation, it is His calling, and it is His plan.

On a side note, how can we not appreciate a God who does all things for man? He did not ask us to earn our own salvation (Eph. 2:8-9: “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; Not of works that no one should boast“), and He does not ask us to initiate or plan our service to Him either. It is His initiation, it is His calling, and it is His plan. Hence, every believer and member of the Body must learn to wait on the Lord.

Phil. 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun in you a good work will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
